Tobacco hit the headlines on three fronts this week as Alberta banned menthol flavoured cigarettes, a judge handed out a $15.6 billion class action award to more than a million Quebec smokers, and the president of a tobacco company from Mohawk territory in Quebec was found not guilty of importing millions of cigarettes without a licence for resale to a First Nations reserve south of Edmonton.The Quebec award relates to two lawsuits filed in 1998 and consolidated in 2005. It compels Imperial Tobacco to pay $10.5 billion; Rothmans, Benson Hedges to pay $3.1 billion; and Japan Tobacco International Macdonald to pay $2 billion.It’s a significant award for the plaintiffs, less so a penalty for the defendants, given that each is owned by a multinational parent company, the combined profits of which were $26.46 billion in 2013 and $23.41 billion in 2014.The companies said they will appeal, but must still pay an initial $1 billion within 60 days. Yukon has neither legislation nor a lawsuit.Taxes versus health care costsIn 2013, the federal and provincial governments took in a total of $7.3 billion in tobacco taxes.Some tobacco companies have argued that numbers like that indicate Canadian jurisdictions have already recovered more in tobacco taxes than they have paid in tobacco related health care costs.In 2002, Health Canada cited total tobacco related health care costs in the country at $4.4 billion.
